Tales of Kyleakin
The Legend of Saucy Mary
Kyleakin’s history is filled with fascinating tales, including that of Saucy Mary, a Norwegian princess who lived in the 15th-century Caisteal Maol. Legend says she stretched a chain across the strait of Kyle Akin, demanding a toll from passing ships - except those from her homeland, Norway. Her boldness and beauty left a lasting mark on the village, and it’s believed she was laid to rest on Beinn na Caillich, facing her homeland.
This captivating story is just one example of the rich heritage of Kyleakin that we strive to preserve and share.

KLHS are delighted to introduce the Kyleakin Tartan, designed for the village by Neil Montgomery. Neil and his family were regular visitors to Kyleakin since his father Hamish was a child and fondly remembers his summers here and playing with the local boys. Kyleakin is still very much in Neil’s heart and this is reflected in the colours which make up the tartan; Pacific Blue, the deep blue of the Kyle of Lochalsh; Anderson Blue, the stoney blue of a spent storm sky; Holly Green, the deep earthy green of the hills surrounding Kyleakin; and Scarlet, the fisherman's blood line, resource and sacrifice.
